Kumasi: Central Market on fire

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a mattress-carrying truck[/caption] The Kumasi Central Market was gutted by fire Monday afternoon. It is unclear what caused the fire but fire officers were at the scene working to douse the flames. Eye witnesses suspect a mattress-carrying truck caused the disaster, which left several stalls in ruins. Property worth millions of Cedis were also burnt to ashes. In an interview with TV3‘s William Evans Nkum, Ashanti Region Minister Simon Osei Mensah described the incident as a major disaster to the region. He said the disaster has awoken debate on the need to redevelop the market, which has suffered numerous disasters of similar nature in the past.
