The decision was made at the 62nd meeting of the Council of UMaT held on Friday, September 15, 2017.
The appointment is said to be the first since the Tarkwa-based university was inaugurated on August 18, 2005.
Mr Kufuor’s appointment is for a first term of five years “and to be renewed for another term of five years”.
The appointment took effect from Wednesday, November 1.
“The appointment makes [Former] President Kufuor the Titular Head of the University and he will preside at the ceremonies of the University and confer on qualified persons all degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded by the University,” a press release issued by UMaT on Tuesday said.
A special congregation will be held for the investiture of Mr Kufuor as Chancellor.
Mr Kufuor was president of Ghana between 2001 and 2009.
He succeeded Jerry John Rawlings and was succeeded by the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills.
