KNUST students in the dark over reopening

November 7, 2018

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been left to their fate over the reopening of the school.

Government had announced that the school would be reopened for academic activities by Thursday, November 8 after appointing a seven-member interim council.

But after that decision by government was ditched with the intervention of Chancellor Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to reconstitute the Governing Council, the calendar leading to reopening has been thrown off-track.

Students who spoke to 3news.com said they are completely in the dark as to when school will reopen.

“I don’t know when we will reopen but I am in my hostel,” a student said on anonymity.

Most of them have, however, decided to go back to school on Thursday.

KNUST was closed down on Monday, October 22 following a violent demonstration embarked on by students.

Property estimated at GH¢1.7 million were destroyed.

The Chancellor had up to Friday, November 2 to reconstitute the Governing Council but this has not seen fruition as a result of entrenched positions taken by government, on one hand, and the other stakeholders, on the other hand.

While government insists representatives for the new Council should change, the others notably the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) say they cannot change their representatives from the old Council.
