‘Kiosks Estate’ at Shiashie razed down by inferno

A slum near the Miklin Hotel at Shiashie, East Legon in Accra was on Friday night razed down by fire.

The fire is said to have swept through the make-shift structures, which have cultivated the name ‘Kiosks Estate’ for the area.

About hundreds of structures were burnt to ashes.

The fire is said to have started around 8:00pm but efforts to reach personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) immediately proved futile.

However, after hours when they got to the scene, the fire officers were unable to easily navigate their way through as a result of the poor situation of the structures.

The Service has, however, launched investigations into the incident.

Eye witnesses say they heard a large explosion from a fuse, which could be the possible cause of the fire, they claimed.

The dwellers had to spend the night at the near-by Presbyterian Church of Ghana, whose doors were opened to them at the instance of the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, John Dumelo, was also at the scene to commiserate with the victims.
