The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has denied media reports that he has resigned.
He said “this is a surprising low in our politics. I am still at post as General Secretary and [my resignation] is a falsehood. I have not moved out of my house the whole day, I have visitors here to attest to that fact so I have not resigned.”
A letter emerged on Tuesday evening purportedly written by Kwabena Agyepong, stating that he had resigned from his position.
Denying the reports which comes on the back of incessant calls for him to resign, Mr. Agyepong said on TV3’s News 360:“I won an emphatic mandate, I intend to see out my mandate till 2018 when it expires. I have not resigned and I want it to be categorical that I have not resigned.
There have been nationwide calls among regional branches of the party to get Mr Agyepong and National Chairman Paul Afoko out of post following the death of Upper East Region Chairman Adams Mahama.
Adams Mahama was assaulted with acid and died hours later at the hospital. He is said to have died of excessive acid burns and shock lungs (acute respiratory acute syndrome).
Two suspects have been identified, Gregory Afoko, brother of Paul Afoko and Asabke Alangbi who is currently on the run.
Mr Agyepong suspects the spoof statement may be from his detractors.
“Those who have done this should be ashamed of themselves to try and hack into my email and use my signature… well these are the kinds of people we are having to confront with, God bless them.”
According to him, efforts across the country to oust him are “unconstitutional” and contrary to the party’s constitution.
He said “there are clear procedures in our constitution and they must be followed. I’m gonna fight and stay, I’m gonna ride the storm.”
