Inusah Fuseini calls for independent probe of GMA boss

Ghana Maritime Authority’s Director-General Kwame Owusu has also been accused of conflict of interest

Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament Inusah Fusieni has called for a thorough and independent investigation into alleged misappropriation and conflict of interest against the Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Kwame Owusu.

Mr. Fuseini, who was addressing journalists at Parliament on Friday, November 2, noted that the demeanour of the Authority’s DG does not speak well of a public official.

“I will call for investigations to be carried out because if actually 11 air conditioners have been bought and now it is everywhere on social media where he is alleged to be saying even eleven air conditioners are not enough.”

The Tamale Central MP’s call comes days after the Maritime boss mounted a strong defense of his action.

Mr Owusu is accused of approving payments of some GHȻ10,000 being cost of food for some 17 people to LUXE Hotels, which he owns.

He also renovated a two-bedroom official residence at Cantonments into a four-bedroom main structure, with a living room, dining room, kitchen, a family room, a library and a basement at a cost of GHȻ 1 million while having personal ties with the one who got the contract for the renovation.

However, he sees nothing wrong with either of these, insisting that the upgrade is rather modest.

But the Ranking Member expressed shock at the revelations.

He observed that the posture of the Maritime boss does not befit that of a public officer.

“The constitution states that a public officer should not put himself in a situation that is likely to bring him in conflict with his duties, so clearly if actually the food was sourced from his hotel, if the food was sourced for seventeen people at the cost of  GHȻ13, 000. If the air conditions were actually eleven, we need to know what kind of house it is…You see there are many questions.”

Mr. Fuseini further said the Maritime Authority boss has displayed a demeanour and character which shows that he is a private person and not a public person.
