Inflation falls to 9.1% in June

The year-on-year inflation rate in Ghana fell to 9.1 per cent in June, from 9.4 per cent recorded in May.

The fall is due to a 0.3 percentage point fall in the inflation rate of the Non-Food group and a 0.2 percentage point fall in the inflation of the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages group.

Monthly change rate for June was 0.8 per cent compared to the 0.9 per cent recorded for May.

The 9.1 per cent inflation rate is the lowest in the last five months – since February.

Non-Food group recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 10.3 per cent in June, compared to the 10.6 per cent recorded in May.

Four sub-groups recorded annual inflation rates higher than the group’s average rate of 10.3 per cent.

Clothing and Footwear recorded the highest inflation rate of 15.2 per cent, followed by Recreation and Culture with 15.0 per cent, Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance with 14.6 per cent, and Miscellaneous Goods and Services at 11.3 per cent.

Inflation was lowest in the education sub sector with 6.2 per cent.

The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages group recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 6.5 per cent.

This is 0.2 percentage point lower than the rate of 6.7 per cent recorded in May. Five subgroups of the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages group recorded inflation rates higher than the group’s average rate of 6.5 per cent.

Coffee, tea and cocoa recorded the highest inflation rate of 18.0 per cent, fruits recorded 10.7 per cent, and vegetables recorded 8.2 per cent, meat products 8.1 per cent and mineral water and soft drinks recorded 7.2 per ecnt.

Inflation was lowest in the milk, cheese and eggs sub sector with 3.3 per cent.

Inflation rate for imported items which was 11.3 per cent was 3.1 percentage points higher than that of locally produced items of 8.2 per cent.

Five regions, namely Upper West, Brong Ahafo [yet to be segregated into the new regions, according to the Ghana Statistical Service], Western, Volta and Ashanti regions recorded inflation rates above the national average of 9.1 per cent.

Ashanti Region recorded the highest Food inflation rate of 7.0 per cent while the Upper West Region recorded the highest Non-Food inflation rate of 13.8 per cent.
