Inaki Williams quality not good enough for Spanish national team – Charles Taylor

Former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak star Charles Taylor says Ghana were only able to secure the services of Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams because he was simply not good enough to maintain a spot in the Spanish national team.

Having featured once for La Roja in 2016 in a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina under then boss Vincente Del Bosque, Inaki Williams failed to make the cut in subsequent call-ups for the 2010 World champions.

He however, capitalised on his Ghanaian decency to switch nationality together with four other players in June 2022 ahead of the recently ended World Cup in Qatar.

Charles Taylor is of the view that, the 28-year-old is only a Ghana international now because he would have been surplus to requirement elsewhere.

According to him, before Ghana attempted to approach Inaki his services would have rather been long secured if he was really needed by Spain.

“We always want to rely on foreign based Ghanaian players, but the question is how many of these foreign-based players are starters in their respective clubs? We just like cheap things, and rejected goods seem to be our priority.

“It really pains me that some journalists were saying all our problems were solved after securing players like Inaki Williams. I only smile and also see such journalist as people whose understanding of football knowledge is suspect,” he said on Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

He added that the attacker’s quality is not what the Black Stars need to solve their striking woes which could eventually get the team a silverware in the future.

“How can our Black Stars be saved because we have Inaki Williams? Do we have better eyes than the Europeans? His gameplay cannot guarantee us any proper title. If the Spanish thought he was good enough, they would have convinced him and his brother to play for them and not Ghana,” he added.

Inaki Williams was recently awarded the best African player of the first round of the ongoing La Liga season.
