Covid: Ghana records Delta variant among populace

The first Delta variant of Covid-19 has been recorded in Ghana.

This was made known by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to the Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, July 2.

There have been reports of the infection of the new strain within the populace but this was denied by authorities as they insisted all the cases recorded were among returning travellers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

As of Tuesday, June 22, Director-General of the Service Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye stated: “No Delta variant has been detected from samples taken from cases in the community.”

Six infections of the strain had been recorded between April and June at KIA.

On Saturday, June 26, Director of Public Health at GHS Dr Franklyn Asiedu-Bekoe expressed suspicions on The Keypoints that the variant may have entered the communities.

But on Friday, the Task Force said the variant has been recorded in the latest round of genomic sequencing.

“Relevant agencies are taking the necessary steps to ensure that spread is contained,” it said.

The infected persons are in good health, the Task Force said.

It has scheduled Sunday, July 4 to provide further details on the matter.

“The general public is advised to adhere strictly to the Covid preventive etiquette while going about permitted activities.”
