Group calls for resignation of Electoral Commissioner

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has called for the immediate resignation of the Electoral Commissioner, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan.

According to AFAG, given the complaints from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) regarding the results of the 2012 Elections, the Electoral Commissioner “failed in discharging his responsibilities.”

Addressing journalists in Accra, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, a member of the group, mentioned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot be blamed for alleged inaccuracies of figures.

“It is worrying if the PPP will come out and the NPP will come out,” he said.

“But in all these instances we think the Electoral Commissioner failed in discharging his responsibilities because the pathway through which the figures were massaged did not come through the NDC headquarters,” he indicated.

“It came when the EC was performing its sovereign responsibilities.”

Dr. Afriyie did not mince words in calling for the resignation of the Electoral Commissioner.

“It is about time that he should resign and go because the documents at stake from the legal and legitimate pathway of getting results collated from those pink and the blue sheets shows clearly that he should bear the entire responsibility of this institution.”

While they condemned the attack of journalists by NPP’s supporters, AFAG pledged support for the party in its pursuit of “justice”.

“We are going to stand clearly by the cause of seeking justice and that is the sovereign pathway and that is what the NPP is doing and we are going to lend our voice and support for this call until that justice is sought.”
