Gov't to put up 600-bed hostel for kayayei

Government says plans are far advanced for the construction of a 600-capacity hostel in Accra for head porters, popularly known as ‘kayayei’. This was disclosed by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on Wednesday, November 13 while presenting the 2020 budget statement. According to him, the 600-capacity hostel will be situated in Agbogbloshie and work on the project will begin in December. “…I am happy to announce that preparations are now complete and the construction of the first 600-bed kayayei hostel will commence in Agbogbloshie next month to provide accommodation and skills training to these vulnerable young women.” Most of these head porters have no conducive place of shelter as most of them spend the night on streets and in markets. The initiative by government forms part of efforts to improve the living conditions of these head porters in providing good shelter for them. Mr. Ofori-Atta also said there are measures in place to improve the lives of persons living in Zongo communities across the country. “Many projects and interventions have been made over the last two years; some completed and others ongoing. The projects cover provision of toilets, drains, Astro turfs and green parks, street lighting, Implementation of Zongo Coders project.” By Irene Amesimeku||Ghana
