Give scholarships to teachers’ children – Fred Agbenyo advocates

Deputy Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo, is suggesting a scholarship package for children of teachers in the country.

The NDC man said teachers are poorly paid in the country and for that matter while they are training other people’s children, their children do not aspire to the highest education since they are unable to cater for their children.

Mr. Agbenyo gave this suggestion on TV3 New Day on Friday hosted by Bright Nana Amfoh while contributing to discussions on the World Teachers Day which was held on Thursday October 5.

“One child of every teacher must be given a free scholarship to study because it is difficult teaching and not being able to pay your child’s fees”, he noted.

He added, “we need to do everything possible to get people into the profession and I don’t know whether we are checking the number of people who are moving out of the profession because most teachers [owes]”.

Mr. Agbenyo noted that “one thing that is putting pressure on the people is housing. They take loan and borrow to start housing or building so they are always in debt but a three bed room for a teacher for his/her retirement will be better”.

“The affordable housing is not what the teacher can afford and if you pretend in paying them well, they will also pretend in teaching”, he cautioned.
