Gideon Mensah’s injury an opportunity for someone else – Chris Hughton

Ahead of Ghana’s forthcoming clash with Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton is not worried about the absence of Gideon Mensah who was ruled out on Tuesday due to injury.

The 64-year-old gaffer has had to make a few changes to his initial squad replacing Inaki Williams with Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer and Alexander Djiku with Kasim Adams due to fitness issues.

He has also added Bechem United striker Hafiz Konkoni to the squad but has lost Gideon Mensah to an injury.

However, Hughton is confident in the team’s preparations indicating that the absence of Mensah will only provide an opportunity for others and not affect the team negatively.

He stressed that the national team is made up of gifted players who are competing for starting slots.

“It’s an opportunity for somebody else. This is an international team. There is no absolute standout first 11. Whatever the squad is, whether 24 or 25, the players, they are all pushing to start,” Chris Hughton told the media on Tuesday.

The team held their second training session on Tuesday at the Accra Sports Stadium with a fully-fit squad and will continue until Thursday and eventually leave on Friday for Antananarivo.
