Ghana’s Columbus Crew stars eye Eastern Conference final despite 1st leg stalemate

Ghanaian trio of Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah and Mohammed Abu missed an opportunity to begin the Eastern Conference finals of the Major League Soccer on a good note after Colombus Crew drew 0-0 at home to Toronto FC Tuesday night.

The Crew had many chances but failed to convert any in a pulsating game.

Columbus’ best chance came in the 85th minute when TFC goalkeeper Alex Bono made a stellar save on Harrison Afful’s stinging shot.

The Crew will have to wait for the second leg with everything to play for.

With 16 days between matches, there was plenty of time not only for players to heal but also for managers to come up with some tactical tweaks.

With the Toronto duo of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco suspended, it was TFC head coach Greg Vanney, who came up with the biggest wrinkle, junking the 3-5-2 that his side played in for the vast majority of the season and going with a 4-1-4-1 instead.
