Ghana in danger of missing World Cup after draw with Ethiopia

Ghana are facing the real prospect of missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after failing to beat Ethiopia on Thursday in Johannesburg.

Black Stars needed to win to remain in strong contention to qualify for the next round but a poor second-half performance saw them draw 1-1 at the Orlando Stadium.

Black Stars went ahead 22 minutes into their game against Ethiopia, courtesy of a goal from ex-Swansea and West Ham United forward Andre Ayew.

Ethiopia responded well, however, as they had shots at goal in search of an equaliser, and it finally came through Getaneh Kebede in the 72nd minute.

The result means Ghana are level on 10 points with South Africa, but the latter have a game in hand as they play Zimbabwe later on Thursday.

Victory for South Africa will take them three points clear at the top before Sunday’s game against Ghana in Cape Coast.

This means Black Stars need a convincing victory on matchday 6 to stand a chance of topping the group and qualifying for the playoffs.
