A fuel tanker on Tuesday evening exploded at a fuel filling station in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region injuring one person.
The injured was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman for medical attention.
The tanker, registered GN5392 -11, was being prepared to offload fuel into an underground tank at the Techiman Excel Fuel Station, when it exploded and went up in flames.Though a distress call was placed to the Ghana National Fire Service in Techiman on time, the personnel appeared helpless as there was no fire tender available to extinguish the fire. The only tender in the town has been broken down.
“For over 40 minutes, there was no firefighting engine in Techiman to fight the explosion. Their fighting engine had broken down,” our correspondent Johnson Takyi reported Tuesday
Fire tenders were consequently requested from Nkoranza and Techiman, which are about 24 killometres away from Techniman.According to our correspondent, it took fire fighters about one and half hours to bring the fire under control but the tanker was totally burnt.
Another truck which was parked close to the tanker also caught fire but officials from the Ghana National Fire Service managed to prevent it from burning. The Techiman Fire Commander, Akenten Mensah, said they were yet to establish the cause of the explosion.
