Friends of Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto backs 'presidential bid' of Agric Minister

A group calling itself Friends of Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie is pressing on the Food and Agriculture Minister to step up and contest the presidential flagbearship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when the time is due for the primaries.

According to the group, Dr. Afriyie Akoto has exhibited a high level of patriotism for the party and country and deserves to be president.

Addressing a press conference in Koforidua, the group’s Eastern Regional Coordinator Isaac Aboagye said: “We believe he has been nursing a presidential ambition and it is only right he is given the chance to lead the NPP.”

Mr Aboagye called on the Minister of Agriculture to consider putting himself up for the task ahead since he would be a better replacement for President Akufo-Addo.

“We support his bid for president in the 2022 presidential primaries.”

They touted his achievement as Food and Agriculture Minister, past contributions and President Nana Akufu-Addo’s description of him as an outstanding minister.

“He is Food and Agriculture Minister for two consecutive time. Nana Addo described him as an outstanding minister after he initiated the Planting for Food and Jobs, changed Ghana from a staple food-importing country into an exporter of staple food.”

The Coordinator of the group added, the New Patriotic Party would require a game changer like Dr Afriyie Akoto, who has all it takes to bring together all the supposed factions within the party.

“His experience in parliamentary work coupled with background in agriculture puts him in the lead.”

They are confident the minister enjoys massive support across the 16 regions of the country.
