Five-star Ghana beat hosts Gabon to qualify for semis & world cup

The Starlets are yet to concede at the U-17 AFCON

Ghana’s Black Starlets became the first African team to qualify for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be staged in India.

The national U-17 men’s side beat hosts Gabon 5-0 on Wednesday, May 17 in their second Group A match at the ongoing African U-17 Cup of Nations.

The match was played at Stade de Port-Gentil.

A brace each from midfielders Eric Ayiah, who opened the score with a penalty, and Patmos Arhin and a solo effort from Emmanuel Toku ensured that the Starlets book a ticket to the semi-final stage of the tournament, which is scheduled to end on May 28.

Ghana will next face Guinea on Saturday at the Stade de l’Amitie in the Gabonese capital of Libreville.

That match will be the final Group A fixture.

Guinea earlier on Wednesday drew 1-1 with Cameroon. A draw against the Starlets will see them through.

Meanwhile, Group B is yet to record a win after all four sides drew on Day 1.

Defending champions Mali were held to a goalless draw by Tanzania while Angola drew 2-2 with Niger.

On Thursday, when the sides step up again in the tournament, Tanzania will play Angola while Mali play Niger in the all-West African clash.
