Western Region Commander of the Ghana Prisons Service DDP Kweku Ababio Ali laments that the Command is facing teething challenges in feeding inmates.

According to him, their suppliers are refusing to supply them food due to indebtedness and fears a crisis if the situation should fester.

“…our suppliers for now are resistant to supply food items especially maize. So, we are in a crisis as to how to take care of our brothers who are unfortunately in prison.”

DDP Ababio Ali revealed the dire straits the Command is in when the Deputy Director of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), Horma Miezah, presented food items worth several thousands of Cedis through the “Good Courses Foundation” of the NLA.

The Regional Commander applauded NLA for the gesture and encouraged other agencies to come to the aid of the Command.

“In fact, you could not have come at any other appropriate time. Indeed, you have come at the right time. The General Public should also endeavour to come here more often and show love.”

Presenting the items, Ms Miezah explained that the items are from proceeds of stakes by the general public.

“…when you stake lotto and you don’t win, we use the proceeds to help the less privileged in society like the inmates, destitute and mentally challenged. So today, we are here to show and share love with our brothers and sisters who are unfortunate to be here.”

She mentioned that under NLA’s “Good Courses Foundation” the Authority is donating to Prisons in the country with the message that “if they are incarcerated it does not mean society has forgotten about them”.

“In fact, if we are able to show them love in these times, they could be inspired to turn a new leaf and contribute their quota to the development of the country. Showing them continue love will also help make their integration back into the society seamless.”

Horma Miezah assured that NLA will continue to “come to your aid anytime we are in the position to do so and we will not hesitate at all”.
