IGP sets boundaries for religious leaders

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has met leaders of the various religious groups in Ghana over the latter’s activities within the remit of the laws of the country.

The meeting was held on Monday, October 25 at the police headquarters.

It was moderated by Professor Margaret Ivy Amoakohene, a member of the Council of State, with lawyers Ace Ankomah and Sampson Lardy Anyenini as resource persons.

The IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, led the Police Management Board (POMAB) to the meeting while the Chairman of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong-Manso, led the religious leaders including Muslim leaders.

After the meeting, the Acting Director-General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, said there was a consensus between the two parties on the matters of the law and religion.

“There was that sort of mutual discussion and respect for each other and all is based on how the churches might conduct their operation and activities, taking into account the position of the law,” ACP Kwesi Ofori told journalists.

“Of late, we have witnessed so many challenges, limitations and things that call for dialogue and I can say that we have agreed and key among the issues discussed is education and law enforcement.”

On his part, the immediate past Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, who is also the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church-Ghana, was satisfied with the discussions.

“. . .We pray that it will go on so that we can have sanity, discipline, in our nation and all of us as Ghanaians will be happy for it”.
