FIFA President Gianni Infantino has pledged the solidarity and support of the world-governing body of football to the people of Turkey and Syria after Monday’s deadly earthquake.

Over 2,500 people were reported dead from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks.

In his statement to pay tribute to victims of the disaster, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved families and friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and with those who have been injured in this tragedy,” he is quoted at saying.

The disaster left some footballers, mostly players of Hatayspor, trapped for hours in the rubble.

Most of them – among them Ghanaian Christian Atsu – have since been rescued.

“We would like to express our solidarity and support to the people of both countries during this terrible time.”
