Cape Coast South’s Ricketts-Hagan accused of giving some Assembly members $100 each to reject nominee

Cape Coast South MP Kweku Ricketts-Hagan

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast South Constituency, Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, has been accused of manipulating the voting on President Nana Akufo-Addo’s nominee of Chief Executive for the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA).

On two occasions, Ernest Arthur, who was CE in the first term of the current government, has failed to poll two-thirds majority to confirm his renomination.

He polled 34 out of 65 votes in the first voting on Monday, September 27 and on Wednesday, October 6 polled 40 out of the total votes cast to be rejected again.

Mr Arthur required only four additional votes on Wednesday to sail through.

Not even the persuasion of the Central Region Minister, Marigold Assan, who went on her knees, will convince the remaining 25 to vote ‘Yes’ for him.

Speaking to Media General‘s Thomas Cann after the voting, some sympathisers of the mayor nominee accused the Cape Coast South MP of being behind the ‘No’ votes.

They said the former Deputy Finance Minister doled out $100 each to some members believed to be sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to vote ‘No’.

Mr Arthur, popularly known as Mayor 1, had challenged Mr Ricketts-Hagan in the 2020 Parliamentary elections.
