Veteran Highlife musician Bessa Simons has been elected as the substantive President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

In elections held across the country on Tuesday, October 10 under the supervision of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), the MUSIGA Vice President beat his only contender, Ras Caleb, to emerge the winner.

Bessa Simons polled a total of 324 votes as against his challenger’s 66.

The elections have been long in coming as the Union has been hit with several lawsuits, which have secured injunctions on the exercise.

The latest by plaintiffs Doe Kwablah Seyenam Nyamadi and Frederick Van Dyk was dismissed by an Accra High Court in August, paving way for Tuesday’s elections.

Since the term of Bice Osei Kuffuor, popularly known as Obour, ended, the Union has been without a substantive President.

The Belembe hitmaker Bessa Simons has held the fort since 2018.
