African Games: Akufo-Addo encourages athletes to showcase continent’s talent

Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered a passionate speech at the opening ceremony of the African Games, urging athletes to strive for excellence and showcase the continent’s rich talent.

The ceremony took place at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, Accra, on Friday evening.

Akufo-Addo emphasised the unity that sports can bring to the continent, expressing his delight at seeing athletes from different countries come together to compete.

He highlighted the diversity of Africa, underscoring the significance of recognising and valuing the distinct cultures, traditions, and identities of each participating country.

The President encouraged athletes to push themselves to their limits and display the full extent of their abilities.

“As you compete in the games in the coming days, remember that your efforts inspire countless individuals across the continent,” he said.

Akufo-Addo also stressed the value of integrity and sportsmanship, calling on athletes to compete fairly and respectfully towards one another. “Strive for excellence, push your limits, and showcase the immense talents that Africa possesses,” he urged.

The President acknowledged the collaborative effort required to make the event successful and appealed to all stakeholders in the sports ecosystem to support Ghana in hosting a memorable event.

Over 6,000 athletes from 53 countries are participating in the 13th African Games, competing in 29 different disciplines.

Currently, Egypt leads the medal table with 11 medals, while host nation Ghana is yet to win a medal.

Akufo-Addo closed his speech by extending his heartfelt congratulations to the athletes for their dedication and determination in reaching the prestigious games.
