District Assembly elections: Voting underway in Kenyasi West

Voting is currently underway in Kenyasi in the Ashanti region following a confusion that erupted in the area over the voters register needed to undertake the exercise.

The Electoral Commission then suspended the voting shifting it to September 2, 2015. According to TV3’s Ashanti regional correspondent Ibrahim Abubakar, “the exercise is currently underway and it has been smooth since it began.

“Yesterday some names were missing and some pictures did not appear in the register but it has all been restored and people have turned up and voting is going on smoothly.”

There was general apathy towards and during the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections which took place on Tuesday September 1 across the country. Only about 3 other electoral areas did not vote following some legal tussles.

In all a total of 18,885 candidates contested in the District Assembly Elections and 43,585 vied for the Unit Committee elections.

There were reports of confrontations at some polling stations because electoral materials did not arrive at the various stations on time amongst other challenges.

The Ghana police service says it has started processing persons who were arrested for various electoral malpractices for court.
