All political parties and other stakeholders must support the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to successfully deliver the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, the Special Representative of Secretary- General and Head of United Nation Office for West Africa, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has said.

He noted that organizing an election is a herculean task which requires the support of all stakeholders to deliver.

Addressing journalists on Monday November 30 ahead of the December 7 elections, he said “to just mobilise and present ideal conditions in which all Ghanaians who are eligible to vote can come out and be able to freely exercise their franchise on election day takes a lot.

“That is why all stakeholders must cooperate and work with the Electoral Commission to ensure that it is able to function at optimum level on Election Day and the days following that.”

He also asked the EC to be receptive to suggestions from the stakeholders to ensure a successful exercise.

“The EC also must make every endeavour to reach out to the stakeholders especially the political parties. It must constantly work to build trust and confidence and to assure them that it is a neutral referee who will ensure that process is credible and transparent and the level playing field is created particularly for political parties participating in the process.

“The UN has been working closely with the EU and other partners to support the EC to ensure that it has the logistical, technical and other supports that it requires to be able to perform this duty to the satisfaction of all actors.”
