Award-winning Nigerian artiste, Davido, singing in Ga during his feature in Darkovibes new song titled ‘Je M’apelle’ is a whole mood. The rare moment has everyone wondering how Darkovibes was able to accomplish such a feat.
In the song, Davido sings his part, “…Tsi o b3nk3 moko, mi sumor bo, mi sumor bo, checki dough meyada bo, checki dough, me checki bo…” which means “come closer because I love you”.
There has been the perception that Ghanaian artistes are unable to fully penetrate the Nigerian music industry due to the language barrier. But this story may be that as Davido sang in a local Ghanaian Language.
In an interview on TV3 NewDay, Darkovibes revealed that it took the Nigerian artiste just a few tries to understand the language and sing with it.
He further explained that this was probably possible due to the similarities in Ga and Nigerian languages referring to history, which indicates that Ga’s migrated from Ile-Ife in South-Western Nigeria.
“The language is almost the same, so that made it easier. He heard the lyrics, and he rehearsed a few times, and he got it,” he revealed.
The ‘Inna Song’ hitmaker added that his association with Nigerian artistes would also aid in the penetration of Ghanaian songs into the Nigerian music market.
According to Darkovibes, dressing up as an African king in the video depicted the African culture in the most indigenous way possible.
Born Paul Nii Amu Andrew Darko, he said the chorus of the music also portrays the life of a typical African. He explained, “based on my in relationships, I have learnt so much. And if you listen to my songs, you will realize I am always tapping into new ways”. He added his stay with his grandparents and the elderly has also influenced his style of music.
‘Je M’apelle’ was released about three weeks ago, but it has gained almost 700k views on Youtube and trending number six on the musical charts.
Darkovibes has collaborated with artists including Omar Sterling R2bees, Joey B, Edem, Efya, Magnom.
In 2016, he worked with MTN Ghana by writing and performing the theme song for the MTN Pulse Campaign.
His song ‘Inna Song’ featuring King Promise received Best AfroBeats/ AfroPop Song Of The Year nomination in the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).
