‘Clean’ Nana Akwasi retains A/R NDC seat

Nana Akwasi is the Ashanti Region Chairman of the NDC

A charged atmosphere was the simplest definition for the scene at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, November 13, when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) elected regional executives.

Over 1,400 NDC delegates assembled to elect executives who will lead the party into the 2024 general elections.

It was a reckoning day for the incumbent whose exploits saw the opposition party gaining significantly during the last held election in a dreaded political environment.

Andrews Augustus Nana Akwasi, against all odds, snatched one seat from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and and closed the votes margin from 23% in 2016 to 26% in 2020.

His message was “consistency, unity and hardwork”.

“We heard a lot of untrue stories about him. We need they were fabrications to dent his image and make him unpopular, but we the delegates knew he was clean” Mohammed, a delegate, told William Evans-Nkum.

NDC’s General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who is also vying for the National Chairmanship post, had told delegates prior to voting “to change some old executives who failed to meet expectations”, a statement many thought could derail the incumbent chairman’s campaign strategy.

“I don’t think our General Secretary was addressing us, may be he was talking to himself,” Fauzia told 3news.com.

After voting, Andrews Augustus Nana Akwasi secured 637 votes against his closest rival Evans Amankwa, who had 572.
