Christian Council condemns Ayawaso by-election violence

The Christian Council of Ghana has expressed concern over violent incident that took place at La Bawalashie Presby during the by-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon in Accra Thursday.

This incident left many injured.

A statement issued Friday by the Council condemned the incident, and called for concerted efforts towards protecting Ghana’s.

“Ghana has taken great strides in building peace and stability. It is therefore of utmost importance for Ghana’s continued stability and development to avoid any incident that may derail the country from its current peaceful course.

“What happened in the by-election is a matter of great concern and is unacceptable,” the Council stated

It called on the security apparatus in the country to be up to task with its responsibility of ensuring that every Ghanaian is safe.

“The security apparatus has a role to play in jealously guarding their political neutrality. To effectively safeguard the electoral process, each and every security agent must remain absolutely neutral and professional in dealing with all parties and elections candidates

“There should be zero tolerance for disrespect of the law and the disregard of the constitutional and civil rights of voters and contestants alike,” it advised.

The Council has meanwhile sympathised with all persons who sustained injuries as a result of the shooting incident, and called for measures to bring to book the perpetrators.

“We join other organisations calling for the entire security set-up of the country to expeditiously conduct investigations into the violence that broke out at the La Bawaleshie Presby JHS Polling Station,” it added.
