A nine-year old girl has had her fingers and other parts of her body cut with a razor blade by her grandmother who accused her of stealing GH¢10 and candies.
The 60-year koko seller, whose name has only been given as Darkoa, inflicted multiple razor blade wounds on the girl to serve as a “punishment,” although the girl was said to have denied stealing the money and the candies from her bag.
Our sources say economic hardship forced the girl’s mother to leave her in the care of the old woman in Tutu to enable her migrate to Accra where she is struggling to make-a-living.
The woman has been picked up by the Akropong Police and is currently in custody assisting investigations, while the girl is being treated at an undisclosed hospital in the area, our Eastern Regional Correspondent, Yvonne Neequaye reports.
The girl [name withheld] , a primary two pupil of Tutu Presby Primary in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region, who could not endure the pain, reported her ordeal to her teachers when she reported to school a day after the incident.
Yvonne reports that the woman admitted to having nicked the girl with razor blades when school authorities went to her house to ascertain the veracity of the girl’s claim, quoting the woman as having said: “Yes, I did it so what? She is my grandchild and very stubborn”
The school authorities and the assemblyman in the town, one Jaro, took the girl to the Tutu Community Health Centre for first aid and called in the Police who came to effect the arrest of the woman.
According to our reporter, residents of the town have remained tight lipped on the issue as they fear being summoned to the Chief’s palace for questioning.
