Nestlé and ECOM Commission Clean Water Initiative for Cocoa Farmers

Nestlé in partnership with ECOM has commissioned boreholes as a part of efforts to improve the livelihood of cocoa farmers and their communities.

Access to clean water is crucial for the health and productivity of farming families. The absence of reliable water sources affects the daily lives of farmers as well as  exacerbates the workload for the household. Together, Nestlé and ECOM provided fifteen boreholes across three administrative regions including Ashanti, Central, and Eastern during the 2024-2025 cocoa season. This significant step is designed to alleviate the challenges faced by cocoa farming households, particularly the burden of fetching water that often falls on women and children.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony the Assistant General Manager for Sustainability at ECOM, Emmanuel Baffoe-Bonie, indicated that by introducing centralized water sources, it frees up time for families, allowing them to focus on other important activities.

The Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Nestlé Ghana Ltd., Deborah Kwablah, emphasized Nestlé’s commitment to implementing interventions that improves the livelihood of cocoa farmers and their families through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. She indicated by ensuring access to clean water; Nestlé is not only improving health outcomes but also empowering communities to build a more sustainable future.

The Chief of Adumasa Manya, Baffour Nadu Tetteh I, expressed his appreciation for the initiative and thanked Nestlé and ECOM for their kind gesture in providing access to clean water. He also took the opportunity to call for support in the construction of a school and health center to further support the healthcare and education needs of the community.

Nestlé recognizes the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders, including local communities in their efforts to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities. By prioritizing innovative and sustainable solutions, Nestlé aims to create long-term positive impact in the cocoa farming sector.

The Nestlé Cocoa Plan is a comprehensive initiative to promote sustainable cocoa farming practices and improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities. The plan aims to address various challenges within the cocoa supply chain, including child protection, farmer poverty, and environmental sustainability.
