The note is being introduced as part of the Bank of Ghana’s 60th anniversary, which falls on March 4, this year. The GH¢5 cedi denomination will be a legal tender as well as a collector’s item. According to the bank, the new note will be blue in colour, has the size of the existing note, and the picture of an instrumental figure in Ghana’s banking sector, which will be unveiled on Friday. Edward Musey is head of the currency management department of the central bank; he spoke with 3FM Business: “Ghanaians have been waiting for this, and it will be in circulation on the market on Tuesday 7th march, to mark the celebration” The note will have additional security features, that are sensitive to touch to aid the blind and visually challenged in identifying the new notes. “We took into consideration our physically and virtually challenged friends, and so there are some features on the notes that will help them,” he added. The climax of the celebration will take place in August this year, which would mark 60 years since the Bank opened its doors to the public.
