Black Galaxies chief Tony Aubynn approves final squad for CHAN qualifiers

Dr Tony Aubynn, chairman of the Black Galaxies management committee, has approved the final squad for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

Head coach Annor Walker and his assistant Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum chose 25 players for this month’s doubleheader against Benin.

Initially, 40 players were invited, but the number has been reduced, with the selected players expected to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Algeria.

Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad and defender Ibrahim Imoro, Hearts of Oak trio Gladson Awako, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, and Mohammed Alhassan, as well as Medeama’s Vincent Atingah are among the notable names on the final list.

“I went through the squad and I’m okay with it,” Dr Aubynn told Alfred Takyi Mensah on Onua Sports’ Agro Fie on Monday, July 18.

He described Black Galaxies’ technical team as competent, and he believes they have chosen the right players for the job.

Dr Aubynn responded to criticism about the exclusion of certain players, including Clinton Duodu, former Bechem United star Augustine Okrah and Mudasiru Salifu.

According to Dr Aubynn, players were left out due to indiscipline. He revealed that some players left camp in Pampram without permission to go on trial.

The Black Galaxies will face Benin in the first round of the CHAN qualifiers. The first leg will take place on July 24 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, with the return leg scheduled for July 30.

The winner will face Nigeria in the second round.

Ghana are looking to return to the Championship after missing the last three editions. Black Galaxies finished second twice in the first three editions.
