Bethany Christian services has said that when a child is not able to remain with their family, they help open the door to a safe, stable, and nurturing home for them.
Bethany Christian services says it partners with local churches, communities, and the government to identify, train, supervise, and support foster families to be the answer for children in need.
“We work to ensure that children who are separated from their families are maintained in family settings as we work to restore them to a permanent family. Foster care is the closest alternative care to the child’s own family. Therefore, we are able to support vulnerable children grow and enjoy society like every Ghanaian child in our community, without any ‘orphanage tag’.
“Everyone can be part of Bethany’s foster care program. All you need is a passion to help vulnerable children. You can be a foster parent yourself or advocate and provide support to a foster parent.”
Isaac Yeboah Agyei, Program Manager, Foster Care told TV3 that “So there are laws, let’s start from international, so international laws and policies require that children are not institutionalized, what it means is the orphanages, the maximum period a child could be in an orphanage is six months per our national policies. A child that is below seven years should not be placed in an orphanage, so per national policy and laws, having children in an orphanage for more than six months or having children below six years is a breach to our national policy and laws.
“And per our children’s act too, we don’t have a right to separate a child from the family, we have what is called National Policy on Child and Family Welfare, that one also tells us that if you have a child who is separated, the approach is that make sure that child is protected in the child’s own family.
“The first approach is to preserve the child’s own family, then we come to alternative family-based care, if in case of emergency, say that, only where it’s established that there’s no other alternative available, that is when that child can be admitted into an orphanage. And that one should be in the shortest possible time.
“So in terms of child protection, as we say, our children’s act is the main thing, it protects every child, it has requirement and laws that make sure the child is protected, let me give you one thing, any child that is placed in foster care is under what we call a “Care Order”, so any child that comes into care, we go to court and the court gives that order, now the care order moves that child from the child’s own family into the Department of Social Welfare.”
