A Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwasi Amakye-Boateng has cautioned Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia not to be complacent in his campaign.
He said winning more votes in the NDCs strongholds than his contender, John Dramani Mahama will not come easy.
In an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, on 12th September, 2023, the Political Scientist said that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should be mindful that a lot of factors are at play in the 2024 elections.
“Dr Mahamadu Bawumia believes he can really pull up votes in the strongholds of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) since he is also from the Northern Region. However, he should be mindful that the dynamics of politics have changed,” Dr Amakye-Boateng advised.
He stated that although during the 2020 elections, Dr Bawumia, then vice presidential candidate, helped the NPP garner a number of votes in the strongholds of the NDC, things are different currently.
“The 2024 election is different. Citizens who were attracted to then running mate Dr Bawumia have changed. Candidate Bawumia would have changed from just being a running mate to the flagbearer himself should he win the NPP flagbearers race.
Voters have changed and currently a lot of factors are at play. So Bawumia’s claim that he will give the NDC’s a tough match in their strongholds cannot be the case as a lot of factors are at play now,” he stressed.
Therefore, Dr Amakye-Boateng has advised Dr Bawumia, to purposely couch a campaign message that would resonate with members of the ‘Zongo’ communities and the three northern regions to enable him win their votes.
