Oliver Barker-Vormawor was arrested and granted bail

The hearing of the treason felony trial of Fix The Country Movement convenor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor hit another snag after the court adjourned the hearing.

Lawyers for Oliver Barker- Vormawor had filed a motion in April, challenging the constitutionality of the charges of treason felony levelled against the activist and was hoping for the commencement of the case.

But in court on Monday, lawyers for the state represented by Senior State Attorney Dentaa Yankah indicated that they had filed a response to the motion by Barker- Vormawor today. Asked if they had been served with the documents by the prosecution, lead counsel for the accused person, Dr Justice Srem Sai answered in the negative but waived his right of service and prayed for the case to continue.

But presiding judge, Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh indicated that she had not received a copy of the document filed by the prosecution, hence adjourning proceedings to May 27, 2024, for hearing to continue.

“Every single day that we come before this court, a court that is supposed to be committed to justice, consistently we’ve been met with nothing but adjournments,” Barker Vormawor indicated.

He further expressed disappointment in the prosecution for their late response in filing documents in opposition to the application. He averred that the state is employing delay tactics to drag the issue in court.

Background

Oliver Barker-Vormawor has been charged with two counts of treason felony after he made comments on social media that have been deemed to be a coup threat.

He was arrested in February 2022 by the National Security after returning from the UK.
