B/A: Pupils escape ‘death’ after makeshift classroom collapses

Some pupils of the Nkranketewa African Faith Basic School at Nsoatre in the Bono region were trapped under a makeshift classroom structure after it collapsed. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, May 7, left many of the pupils traumatised. Established some seven years ago, the Nkranketewa African Faith Basic School has not seen much development. Pupils in the lower primary have for the past six years been studying under a shed made from aluminium roofing sheets and bamboo sticks which was constructed for the school by its Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). A shed occupied by Kindergarten 1 to Primary 3 has become weak, and on Tuesday, the structure collapsed. An eye witness, who narrated the incident to 3News, said the shed collapsed during lunch break when some of the school children were playing under the shed, trapping them in the process and injuring one. Parents upon hearing the news trooped to the school’s premises to check on their wards, and helped in the rescuing of the pupils. School authorities say appeals had been made to the District Education Office and the District Assembly but have fallen on deaf ears. Currently a Netherlands based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) is putting up some structures for the school, but is yet to be completed. By Rosina Foster| 3news.com|Ghana]]>
