Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem has questioned the motive behind President Akufo-Addo’s comparison of the work of the former Auditor General Daniel Domelevo and the current Acting Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, saying he cannot fathom the basis of the President’s comparison.

He pointed out that the acting Auditor General’s report was based on the year 2019 and by that period the former Auditor General was not in office.

Mr Azeem stressed that Daniel Domelevo was not asked to leave his position as the Auditor General because he was incompetent at the work that he did.

He said when the acting Auditor General Mr Asiedu was asked to step in the shoes of Mr Domelevo and just a day after he dealt with the case of Osafo Marfo, he was very disappointed and realized the country was going in the wrong direction.

The former Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) said the case of Mr Osafo Marfo was the one that brought Mr Domelevo into the bad books of the President and for the acting Auditor General to be done with it just a day after his assumption into office smacked of something fishy.

And in his subsequent report, he said the acting Auditor General made no mention of the issue of surcharging that was fraught with Mr Domelevo’s earlier report on Osafo Marfo.

When asked what will be his expectation of the acting Auditor General after the President hinted at making him the substantive Auditor General based on his works done so far in that portfolio, Mr Azeem said it is important that audits are done promptly so that office holders don’t leave office before their audit reports comes out.

He emphasized that it is important that audit reports are made and submitted promptly so that office holders will be available to answer for any irregularities and also the willingness of the powers that be to act on those reports, which Auditor General after another has complained about in the country.

Mr Azeem said this in an interview with Dela Michel on the Mid Day news on TV3, Thursday, August 19.

He was commenting on the heels of President Akufo-Addo’s comparison of the the works of the former Auditor General Daniel Yaw Domelevo who was axed from his position for his age and the acting Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, saying the processes are been put in place to make him the substantive Auditor General for his exploits at the post.

“You see we are talking about the 2019 assessment, Mr Domelevo was not in office right? So I don’t know the basis for that comparison, in any case Mr Domelevo was not asked to leave because of poor performance”, he pointed out.

He continued that “when the acting Auditor General was asked to step in the shoes of Mr Domelevo and a day after he dealt with Mr Osafo Marfo’s case, some of us were disappointed to point it out that we were going in the wrong direction because this was the case Mr Domelevo was handling and all of a sudden just one day after assumption of office, you say you are satisfied with the records and then the matter ended there”
