Ayawaso West Wuogon disturbances: IGP demands speedy investigations

Inspector General of Police David Asante-Apeatu[/caption] Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu has called for investigations into the disturbances at Bawaleshie in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency to be sped up. He gave the directive to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after Thursday’s disturbances. The disturbances during the by-election in the Constituency left six people injured. Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency Sam George, who was monitoring the exercise, was also assaulted by operatives of the National Security. His party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), withdrew from the by-elections after the disturbances.

A news release signed by Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service Sheila Kessi Abayie-Buckman on Thursday confirmed that no one died, despite fears and reports in the media. “Calm has been restored to the area and the six injured persons are responding to treatment at the Legon and 37 Military Hospitals.” The general public, especially constituents, has been urged to remain calm.
