Asanko Mine WIM targets 25% women participation by next three years

Women in Mining (WIM) Ghana are spearheading efforts to encourage more females to consider mining as a career to bridge the gender disparity gap in the extractive sector.

Asanko Mine Chapter of WIM is exploring new ways to encourage more women especially students in the basic and second cycle institutions to take up the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as core subjects to enable them work along the value chain of the mining sector.

United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 seeks to achieve gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls.

Globally, current statistics, however, indicate only eight to 17 percent of women are working in and along the value chain of the mining industry.

On this premise, Asanko WIM says it has targeted to increase women representation in the mine from 17 to 25 percent in the next three years.

Newly elected president of the Asanko Mines Chapter of Women in Mining Gloria Mensah Bentil during a short induction ceremony explained that “strategically, as the newly elected president, we are targeting basic and second cycle students to encourage them to develop the interest in the STEM education so that they will automatically work along the mining sector’s value chain”.

Mrs Mensah Bentil, the local president, explained that “under my leadership, we will have a series of interesting activities such as formation of girls club in various schools to guide them in career path choosing as they are growing so that they will develop the urge and interest to choose the right profession that will end them in the mining industry.”

The President of Women in Mining Ghana, Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo, explained there are Women in Mining chapters dotted across all the mining companies in Ghana and the main purpose is to advocate for full participation of women in the mining sector.

The National WIM President added that “though the job is very difficult but one thing we have noticed is that setting target is not enough so we have to take the step and sensitize females to develop interest so they can access jobs in the mines, I am not talking about janitorial roles and canteen works in the mine, we want the females to take up top management and administrative roles in the various mines”.

Mrs Sakyi-Addo indicated that WIM is not focused on taking up the already occupied roles of the men but all that they want is participation.

“We want full participation of women in all aspects of the mine to ensure diversified work force to achieve resilient output and also to close the gender disparity gap in the extractive sector.”
