Akufo-Addo picks Bawumia as running mate for re-election bid

President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced he will maintain Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election in December. This will be the fourth time the President will be pairing with the astute economist to go into presidential election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Addressing a crowd of party faithfuls after filing his nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, Nana Akufo-Addo said the choice of Dr Bawumia was an easy one to make, and stated it was not something that required thorough thinking. “The Party rules require that once you are declared flagbearer, you have to choose a running mate. This is not something to think about. Once I’m declared the flagbearer, this same man will be my running mate; Mahamadu Bawumia will be my choice” he said to a loud cheer from the crowd. He added: “still maintained, no change. No curve, no bend. We are moving on forward”. Nana Akufo-Addo who is seeking re-election to do four more years is the only candidate to have picked and filed nomination for the presidential primary of the NPP to be held across the country on April 15. His candidature is expected to be affirmed by the party’s delegates who have already been campaigning with the slogan ‘Four More For Nana. President Akufo-Addo described as an honour, the opportunity given him to go unopposed in the party’s presidential primary. “It is encouraging to see the level of confidence reposed in me” he said in Twi, adding “I will not forget the love shown me” He assured the party faithfuls he will lead them to victory in the December polls, but pleaded with them to also do their part by registering in the upcoming voters’ registration exercise in order to vote massively for him. “The hope of Ghanaians is the NPP. The NPP is the only party to give Ghanaians comfort and development. My plea is very simple; help me for Ghanaians to give me four more years, four more for Nana,” he told the ecstatic crowd. In his view, former President John Mahama who is seeking a comeback, has nothing to offer the country. “Someone [in reference to Mahama] is saying he did not finish the work and that he is coming to continue. What job, what job did he come to do? We have retrogressed in everything. He wants to come and take us back again, no! We are moving forward. We won’t make that mistake,” he stated. According to him, Mahama has only been criticising the work of his government and has failed in offering alternatives to things he claimed are not being done right. Touching on the processes to elect parliamentary candidates for the party, Nana Akufo-Addo said it is important for the exercise to be conducted in a peaceful manner in order not to cause divisions within the party.
