An 85th minute strike by Thembinkosi Lorch was the difference as the Bafana Bafana of South Africa shocked hosts and record champions Egypt in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
The 74,000-seater Cairo International Stadium went dead silent as the Pharaohs were knocked out of the tournament by the less fancied South Africa.
Egypt had not dropped points going into the encounter with their opponents teetering on the verge of tournament exit, having picked the last spot as one of the four best third-placed qualifiers from the group stage.
As expected, the Pharaohs dominated play despite managing only 3 shots on target in the entire game.
With just 37% of possession, the 1996 winners hit 6 shots on target, better than their opponents, who had the two-time African Footballer of the Year Mohamed Salah in their fold.
But it was Orlando Pirates’ Lorch who broke the deadlock with five minutes to end the fourth Round of 16 game.
It was a delectable win for the Bafana Bafana who scored only one goal in Group D, in their lone-goal victory over Namibia.
They will next play Nigeria’s Super Eagles for a place in the semi-finals.
