Adoboli welcomed home with Akple and chilled beer

November 15, 2018
Kweku Adoboli ready to enjoy his meal

After 26 years stay in the UK, Kweku Adoboli, the former UBS banker jailed for UK’s biggest ever fraud, arrived in Accra Thursday to a rousing welcome by his family.

The deportee, who was been fighting to stay in the UK, was taken to his family house in Accra where he was served an Ewe meal – akple and fetridetsi –  and a chilled club beer.

Adoboli wore a black T-shirt and beamed with smiles as he was surrounded by family members before he was ushered to the dinning table to have his first meal in Ghana after more than two decades.

Adoboli, 38, who was found guilty in 2012 of fraud that lost his Swiss bank $2.3bn (£1.8bn), is being deported to Ghana because he is not a British citizen despite living in the UK since the age of 12.

On Wednesday, he was deported to Ghana despite a long campaign to keep him in Britain.

His lawyer confirmed he was flown out of Heathrow Airport this evening after being detained in Scotland on Monday.

Adoboli was expected to be put on a charter flight in September, but a judge awarded a last-minute reprieve while his case was reviewed.

He however lost the appeal, leading to his deportation to Ghana.

Since then, more than 74,000 people have signed a petition against Adoboli’s deportation, with more than 130 members of the UK and Scottish parliaments signing a letter asking Home Secretary Sajid Javid to intervene.

Adoboli was found guilty of booking fictitious trades to cover up big losses during the financial crisis between 2008 and 2011.

He pleaded not guilty, saying his senior managers knew what he was doing and encouraged him to take risks.
