Achimota sch: Lunatics, land guards take over lands, students living in fear

file photoStudents of Achimota School are living in fear following activities of land guards and other criminals on the school premises.

The activities of these land guards and criminals have extended onto other lands which belong to the school. These school lands have been encroached upon by persons who claim they acquired the lands legally.

Passionately speaking about the frustrations about the land issues, the headmistress madam Beatrice Adom said the situation has made teaching and learning difficult.

The school authorities say worshipers and leaders of the prayer camps block access to the school adding that noise emanating from the prayer camps affect effective teaching and learning.

She said “sometimes when you go to the compound, you see the lunatics who stray onto the premises and sometimes you see them begging the students for money and we have been saying that please take the prayer camps (in the forest) away.

“We are all Christians and some of them are muslims etc but we have to do things the right way. We have to worship God in spirit and in truth not by encroaching on someone’s land.”

About 5 dead bodies have been found around the school lands just this academic year and such news creates an atmosphere of fear and panic on campus.

The school authorities are linking the increase in dead bodies around the school to the invasion from land guards, unauthorized religious activities, mentally retarded persons and squatters.

The headmistress recounted several instances where the mentally challenged have butchered non teaching staffs, teachers and two police personnel saying that some of these land guards wielding machetes attacked a police officer who had to be hospitalized for about six months.

The said police officer had been called in due to the activities of some of these land guards and was attacked severely.

She said these when the regional leadership of the Ghana Police Service visited the school on a fact finding mission to ascertain the veracity of the complaints.

The Accra regional police commander, COP Dr. George Akufo Dampare, in his response, expressed dismay over the alleged murder cases and assured the school authorities of prompt response to their concerns.

He said “we’d do whatever it takes so that together we would keep our environments safe. We can assure you that you would have something good to say about us.”
