Accra Lions to make Ghana Premier League debut six years since its inception

Accra Lions’ rise to the top of Ghana football has been rapid. Founded in 2015, it has taken them just six years to be referred to as a Ghana Premier League club.

Accra Lions started from Greater Accra Division Two League. It didn’t take them long to understand the terrain and dominate it. In their second season, they topped the Zone IV division championship with a record 73 points in 28 matches before winning promotional playoffs to qualify for Division One League.

In their first season, the league was cancelled by the government as a result of Anas corruption exposé. The following season 2019/2020 fell victim to the Covid pandemic as well. When football fully resumed in November last year, Accra Lions set sights on securing promotion to the top-flight.

Fortunately for them, their hard work paid off as they beat former Ghana Premier League club Tema Youth to the sole ticket in Zone III.

On Friday evening, they will make their top-flight debut against Elmina Sharks at the Accra Sports Stadium. The fixture is ushering in the 2021/22 season.

Rainer Kraft is the brain behind the club’s promotion. The German was appointed as head coach in 2019 and has done an extraordinary job with the young squad, but he wants more.

“We are very ambitious; the team has an ambitious coach. We want to win matches and we want to be in the best possible position. We know it’s a different thing to be in Division One but we will give our best to succeed,” Kraft said.

Talking about the preparations ahead of the season he revealed the team have been engaged in some preseason friendlies ahead of the season.

“We have worked very very hard on our physical abilities in the last few weeks, we are definitely ready. We had our preseason friendly versus Hearts of Oak which we luckily won. We gave them a good prep match for their qualification cup match so I think we are prepared.”

The Lions have been very busy in the transfer market, signing 12 players.

“We have made a lot of signings in all parts of the pitch, all of them are very young, and very promising players,” he added.

The match will kick-off at 6 pm.
