Accra can withstand anticipated floods this year – Mayor

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuiye says Accra would be able to withstand the volume of rains that turned disastrous last year.

There have been dredging works, desilting of the Korle lagoon and the Odaw River, the mayor explained, adding that lives and property would be secured, should there be flood.

The mayor was speaking at a press conference Thursday to brief the media on programmes lineup to commemorate the one year anniversary of the June 3 disaster.

“I am here this morning to officially report to you that Accra is standing better than before. The continuous work to ensure that the dredging of the Odaw and Korle will continue unabated we have ensured that that the people’s capital is secured”.

“We all can be witnesses to the fact that t just last week the capital experienced four days of continuous rain, and the capital was able to withstand. Accra is now better”, he emphasized

He pleaded with Ghanaians to support government efforts in making the entire nation flood-free.

“We will continue to enforce the protection of our environment, but I must say that it is not only for the government. It is everybody’s job. Let us check how we manage our waste, because waste adds and compounds the problem for us.

“These are matters that the assembly will continue to ensure. These are lessons hard learnt, and we must all come together to ensure, June 3 does not repeat itself,” he pleaded.

The mayor highlighted some activities that will be marking the first anniversary of the twin disaster.

He announced that a park would be dedicated to the memory of the deceased.
