A Senior Research Fellow at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr Smart Sarpong, has said 73 per cent of the delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region believe the party can break the 8-year cycle in the 2024 general elections.

Although this is good news for the party, it also means hard work for the newly-elected regional executives because 26 per cent of the delegates think otherwise.

Speaking in interview with TV3’s Komla Adom on the mid day news on Monday May 30 in relation to the just-ended regional executive elections of the NPP, Dr Sarpong who earlier made some projections regarding the results, prior to the polls said “prior to the polls, I followed on the slogan called breaking the 8 and I was trying to find out whether the region was ready to break the 8. Of course, due to the fact that this region appeared the stronghold of the NPP, so it was broader exercise I undertook.

“One information I have for you this afternoon and your listeners and viewers and the NPP people is that 73 per cent of delegates in Ashanti believe NPP can break the 8.

“That means that about 26 per cent do not believe that the NPP can break the 8 and I think it is the first assignment for all elected regional executives to make sure that of they really mean the slogan they have to first try and ring up every delegate.”

The Ashanti Region Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) retained his position in the polls. He polled 464 votes against his closest contender’s 306.

He indicated in his victory speech that the governing party will definitely break the 8-year cycle in the 2024 general elections.

He said the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot stop the NPP’s plan of winning the 2024 polls.

In his victory speech on Saturday May 28 after the NPP’s Ashanti region election at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi he said “our campaign of breaking the 8 has stared from Baba Yara Stadium, NDC cannot stop us.

“[NDC] can lie, [NDC] can spread fake news but winning the 2024 elections is a movement.”
