The clashes erupted on Wednesday afternoon after a man whose name was given as Ali was assaulted on Tuesday night by a group of men believed to have come from the Asante-dominated part of the town.
Ali, TV3 gathers, went to ease himself at that part of town, a situation that sparked anger among the Asantes.
The Bonos are said to have retaliated on Wednesday by attacking the Asantes.
Eight persons have been reported injured and are on admission at the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman.
Speaking on TV3’s News 360 a few hours after the clashes, Techiman Divisional Police Commander Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Twumasi Ankrah said no arrests have been made but a joint police-military team has been deployed.
He said those who exchanged gunshots were said to have ridden motor bikes and zoomed into the near-by bushes after firing gunshots.
They were all veiled, he added, and so made it difficult for people to identify them.
He expressed suspicion that a long-standing dispute between the “northern side” of the town and its “southern side” may be behind Wednesday’s clashes.
