Ghana’s President, Akufo-Addo (L) had earlier congratulated Oppong Weah[/caption] The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has congratulated one of Africa’s finest football legends, George Oppong Weah, on his election as President of Liberia in Tuesday’s presidential election runoff. The presidential candidate for the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) will succeed Ellen John Sirleaf, who is Africa’s first elected female president and the first president of Liberia upon the country’s return to democratic rule after decades of civil war. Mr. Weah, who won on his third attempt at the presidency, will assume the reign of government in Liberia’s first peaceful and democratic handover from one elected administration to another since 1944. “The NPP also congratulates the losing candidate and outgoing Vice President, Joseph Boakai as well as his supporters and the good people of Liberia for the maturity they exhibited throughout the electioneering period and its aftermath. With this democratic milestone, Liberia has made the West African Subregion, Africa and the World, PROUD,” the party said in a statement signed by Acting General Secretary John Boadu. “Now that the elections are over, and the WILL of the significant majority of the Liberian Electorates has prevailed, it is the wish of the NPP that ALL Liberians would throw their full support behind George Weah’s administration towards developing the country on the path of prosperity,” it added. The NPP also called on  African governments and the international community to provide the needed assistance to the Weah regime in support of the country’s rebuilding efforts.
