Mr Weah was on Thursday confirmed winner of last Tuesday’s presidential run-off, beating Vice President Joseph Boakai. In a statement on Friday to congratulate the former football star, Ghana’s leader commended Mr Boakai “for the maturity of his campaign”. “This election has strengthened the frontiers of democracy in Liberia.” Wishing the president-elect and vice president-elect Jewel Taylor well, President Akufo-Addo expressed hope that the new leadership will help in improving the living standards of Liberians.

Meanwhile, his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, who led the Ecowas Observer Mission to Liberia, has also congratulated Mr Weah and Liberians, in general, for the peaceful outcome of the polls. “Liberians have made themselves and the ECOWAS region proud and with the election fever now over, every Liberian should see the task of nation building and development as a collective patriotic responsibility,” Mr Mahama stated on Facebook. He expressed gratitude to the ECOWAS Commission and particularly to Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, Ghana’s immediate past Electoral Commissioner, for their work before, during and after the elections.
